Rosary Sonata No. 16 in G Minor for Solo Violin, “Passacaglia” · Heinrich Ignaz Franz von Biber
Biber’s solo-violin Passacaglia, from his Rosary Sonatas, precedes Bach’s solo sonatas and partitas by 50 years. The Rosary Sonatas are fifteen sonatas for violin and continuo portraying the fifteen Mysteries of the Rosary and a Passacaglia for solo violin. In the original manuscript, there is an ink drawing of a guardian angel with a child preceding the first lines of music.
